Sponsor a Child

We are looking for sponsors to help pay for a child's education. If you think that you could help, please read our sponsor guidelines and privacy statement,  then select the Sponsor a Child button or contact us at Calvary.Zion@googlemail.com for more information.

The Kenyan state school system is free and there are also many private fee-paying schools. In the past Calvary Zion Children's Home Support Trust has supported sending the children to the fee-paying schools due to the lower standards in the state schools.

However, in recent years the standards in the state schools has improved and we now support the children attending those schools. See our Covid 19 update. Read this article for more information on the Kenyan school system. Older children can go on to attend technical colleges or university.

Even though the education system is free, there are still overheads and costs involved, for example:
  • Uniforms and sports kit
  • Transport to and from school- The children attend a number of different schools around Mombasa so the Home uses a minibus which needs maintenance and they hire 'matatus' when needed
  • Lunch is cooked at the Home and transported to the children which ensures that they have a good meal during the day, especially the younger ones
  • Some of the children attending secondary school are boarding so that they are able to concentrate on their studies. This means extra outlay such as mattress and bedding
  • Those undertaking technical courses such as catering or mechanics have extra fees and have to supply their own tools and equipment.

Frequently asked questions

Why does Calvary Zion Children's Home Support Trust need sponsors?

We believe that in sponsoring an individual child you can identify with that child and take an interest in their development. The child might also feel more supported knowing that someone is taking an interest in them.

How does it work?
The Trust finds sponsors to pay the fees for individual children, preferably for as long as the child attends school and college.
We collect the donations in our charity bank account in the UK and make a bank transfer twice a year to the Calvary Zion Children's Home bank account in Kenya.

How much does it cost?
It costs about £300 (UK pounds) per year for to cover costs for a child to attend primary school and slightly more for secondary schools. This can be paid monthly or in a lump sum once a year. We can claim Giftaid on behalf of UK tax payers.

What if I can't pay the full amount?

You could donate money towards school clothes or equipment for a child. Use the Sponsor a Child button and select the single payment option.

Here is an idea of typical costs per child for a year:
  • Uniform £45
  • Books £30
  • Sports kit £20
  • Shoes £20
  • Bag £6

There are still 13 children without sponsors.
